Beistegui Hermanos (BH) is translated as Beistegui Brothers (BH). BH was founded in 1909 by Juan and Cosme Beistegui (and still owned by the Beistegui family today) as a firearms manufacturer in Eibar, Spain – the famed Basque Country of northern Spain. In 1923 BH turned its expertise to bicycles. It was a perfect fit for a company that had skilled metal forming experience. It was also a perfect fit for the sport of cycling, that in those days attracted hearty and rugged working-class mountain men – the Basque Country has plenty of mountains.
BH made everything for its bikes but the tires, including a tannery to produce leather saddles until 1959, when BH moved to Vitoria-Gastiez, Spain where it remains to this day. In the early 90’s BH purchased Peugeot, forming Cycleurope. BH developed Cycleurope into one of the largest, most successful bicycle companies in the world. In 1996 BH sold Cycleurope, re-establishing BH as an independent brand, meeting with great success from the cycling press; France: Le Cycle Bike of the Year 2005, UK: Cycling Plus 2006 Bike of the Year, Spain: Ciclismo a Fondo 2006 Frame of the Year, racing teams; A 2006 survey of French pros revealed BH to be the bike they’d most like to ride, and cyclists throughout Europe.
BH believes in developing technically superior bikes through racing. A prime example of this is BH’s innovation of the Integrated Seat Tube, first seen on the Liberty Seguros bikes in 2004. One of the first professional cycling teams, Team BH, was made up of BH employees. Early BH victories include the first two Vueltas a Espana in 1934 & 1935, with a total of 5 Vueltas won on BH. Tour stage victories include the first Spanish Alpe d’Huez win by Federicio Echave in ‘87. Echave finished in 5:52:11, 1:32 ahead of his BH teammate Anselmo Fuerte. A bend of the Alpe is named after each year’s winner; Echave’s bend is #10 (Stephen Roche won overall in ‘87). BH recently supplied bikes to members of both the French & Spanish teams in the world cyclocross championships. BH re-enters the pro peloton supplying the all new-cutting edge G4 nano-carbon bike to French powerhouse AG2R.
Today: BH has two large manufacturing and assembly facilities in Vitoria, Spain and one in Portugal, including CNC laser machining producing the highest end fitness equipment in Europe as well as parts for both BMW and Mercedes Benz. BH is one of the largest Spanish bicycle brands, making over 200,000 bicycles per year. BH is supplying AG2R, Auber 93, Vanderkitten and Metro VW of Texas. Now BH’s history, tradition and technology and most importantly, bikes, are available in the US from BH USA in Tempe, AZ.
