BH's new acquisition has practiced triathlon since she was very young, but she had danced ballet and played volleyball, karate, and tennis before. Encouraged by friends and spurred by her eagerness to better herself, she became a pro in 2006.
"I've always liked sports. At the university I had a lot of friends who practiced many sports and I admired their discipline and endurance. Triathlon was something unattainable to me, especially because I was able to just swim 50m in a straight line! Being able to complete in what seemed to be an impossible distance or training is really amazing. This is what pushes me forward," Monica says.
4th in the ITU World Duathlon Series ranking
The triathlete sponsored by BH has won a good number of races: all the national duathlons she has competed in since 2008, the White Rocks Long Distance Triathlon in Zambales, Philippines (2008), and the Ironman 70.3 CamSur in her homeland two years in a row (2009 and 2010). Also, she won a silver medal at the Port Dickson International Triathlon in Malaysia (2010).
Rapid progress led her to the 4th place in the ITU World Duathlon Series ranking in 2010 (the best ranked Philippine duathlete) and to be named K-Swiss Philippine ambassador. This season, Monica Torres has been on the top of the podium three times, winning the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon, the Men's Health All-Terrain Race, and the 1st QCTAA Fun Run.
Monica, who has a degree in Sports, decided last year she would not compete this season with the duathlon/triathlon national team "to take part in and enjoy different races and events." The new BH triathlon rider wants to participate not only in different triathlon events, but in other races as well like the Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge, a 30-day cross-country event that last year finished in April.
The Aero, my "better half"
Monica rides a BH GC Aero in competition, which she describes as "a light and smoothly rolling bike." The combination of the Manila-born triathlete and the GC Aero is a happy marriage. "To me, BH is my 'better half.' Most triathletes say they usually spend more time with their bikes than with their family or friends. I have friends who even say they're married to their bikes or call them 'my girlfriend.' I'm lucky my husband is a triathlete too, so I spend much time with both my BH and my 'better half'," she laughs.
